Convert Your Outdated Heating System
Converting a vented heating system to a combi boiler offers significant benefits, including greater energy efficiency, lower running costs, and freeing up space in your home. A conventional vented system uses a separate cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder, which is much less efficient than a modern combi boiler.

Benefits of a Modern Heating System

Lower heating and hot water bills
Modern combi boilers are highly efficient, with efficiency ratings of 90% or more.
This upgrade could save you hundreds of pounds a year on your
energy bills

Immediate access to hot water
A combi boiler provides instant hot water straight from the mains whenever you turn on a
tap.
Hot water is delivered at mains pressure, which can result in a more powerful shower without a separate pump.

Reduced maintenance
With fewer components in the system, there are fewer points of failure, which means lower maintenance and repair costs.
The system has less pipework, which makes the installation quicker and cheaper than an outdated system.

Compact designs that save space
A combi boiler removes the need for a cold water tank in your loft and a hot water cylinder, which frees up valuable space.
The all-in-one unit can often be fitted into a kitchen cupboard,
creating more storage room in your home

Compatible with smart thermostats
Modern heating systems are compatible with smart thermostats like the Hive Mini.
These modern devices allow you to intelligently manage the heating in your home and control it remotely via an app on your phone
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a conversion take?
A conversion is a complex job that can take between 2 and 3 days to complete. This is longer than a simple like-for-like boiler swap, which can often be done in a single day.
Is a system conversion really worth the investment?
A modern combi boiler system can reduce your bills by hundreds of pounds every year. It also provides you with instant hot water and heating without the need to store water in an inefficient tank that takes up space in your home. You’ll benefit from instant hot water, increased water pressure and lower bills.
What is a vented system?
A vented system, also known as a “conventional” or “gravity-fed” system, relies on separate components: a boiler, a hot water cylinder (typically in an airing cupboard), and cold water and feed and expansion tanks (usually in the
loft). Hot water is stored and available in a limited quantity.
What is a combi boiler?
A combi boiler or “combination” boiler is an all-in-one, compact unit that heats water directly from the mains supply on demand. It provides hot water and central heating instantly, without the need for any storage tanks or cylinders.
What are the main benefits of converting to a combi boiler?
More space: Removing the tanks from the loft and the hot water cylinder from the airing cupboard frees up valuable storage space.
Energy efficiency: Combi boilers are highly efficient because they only heat water when you need it, which can reduce energy bills, especially compared to old, inefficient boilers.
Instant hot water: With a combi boiler, you get hot water on demand without having to wait for a tank to heat up.
Increased water pressure: By taking water directly from the mains, combi boilers can significantly improve the flow and pressure at your taps and showers.
What does the conversion process involve?
1. Drain the system: The engineer will first drain your existing heating and hot water system.
2. Remove old components: Your old boiler, hot water cylinder, and cold water storage tank will be removed. In older properties, a tank may need to be cut up to fit through a loft hatch.
3. Upgrade pipework: The gas supply pipe will likely need to be upgraded to a 22mm pipe to meet the demands of the new boiler. Other pipework may be adjusted or replaced to handle the higher water pressure.
4. Install the new boiler: The combi boiler will be fitted, often in the same location as the old one, but it can be moved if needed.
5. Flush the system: A power flush or chemical flush is highly recommended to clear the existing pipework and radiators of sludge and debris. This protects the new boiler and can be a requirement to validate its warranty.
6. Test and certify: The engineer will test the new system and controls, and provide building regulation notification and certification.
How much does it cost?
The cost of converting from a vented system to a combi boiler typically ranges from £2,500 to £6,000, though this can vary depending on the complexity of the job, the boiler model, and your location. The extra cost compared to a like-for-like replacement is due to the removal of the old tanks and cylinder and the required pipework modifications.
